The project in Ysbyty Cwm Cynon, Mountain Ash, South Wales was completed in January 2020.

The grey wall was the only view from one of the wards and feedback collected via a short survey understandably described it as enclosed, dull and depressing. I was commissioned to produce landscape artwork to improve the outlook for the patients, their visitors and staff on this ward.

Research shows that landscape views can have significant benefits for patients, affecting pain relief requirements, recovery times and even the length of stay in hospital (Ulrich, 1984). The feedback collected after the artwork was installed confirms these findings. When asked what they felt about the new view and why someone stated :-

"Happier... because you can imagine it's real and that you can walk in the grass and look behind the trees."

Another said :- "Colour's calming and takes the stress away."

Further feedback is shown below and differs significantly from the previous survey results regarding the original view.

Fifteen vinyl weather-proof panels were installed in the courtyard space and additional artwork was placed in the rooms and ward in order to connect the inside to the outdoor space, creating a panoramic type view.
